Abergavenny, Monmouthshire
The Skirrid Inn is near Abergavenny and is believed to be the most haunted and most oldest public house in the UK. The inn got it's name from the 'skirrid mountain',the inn stands in the shadow of the mountain which is sometimes called the Holy mountain, it is said that the mountain broke in two at the time of the crucifixion of Christ during a violent storm.
The Skirrid Inn is very old and the building was first mentioned on record in 1110. It is no surprise to learn that the pub is so haunted, the Skirrid has a long history of violence and death. The Skirrid Inn was where Judge Jeffries started his career of executions. Inside the pub is a beam that still has the rope marks , these rope marks are from all the hangings that were carried out in the inn. Also at the inn is the old courtroom which is on the first floor. The cell is also still there, the men that were due to be executed would of slept and spent their last evening in this cell before facing death the following morning. The inn was also the place where the Welsh and the English would go to to use the ancient mounting stone, this stone is still in the pub's forecourt today.
Many ghost stories circulate the inn, many of the inn visitor's have felt the feeling of a noose around their neck and have later left the pub with red rope marks that have suddenly appeared on their neck. Other people have seen glasses flying across the room and the sound of cackling is heard on a frequent basis coming from upstairs. Various items will disappear and then will reappear.
